Best Photoshop free alternative?

As the title says, I am looking for the best Photoshop (FREE) alternative.

I have a low budget for YouTube at the moment and I need to start making more professional thumbnails for my videos at a low expense, preferably no expense.

I tried the software:
GIMP
paint.NET

and I also tried various online methods, none of which suit me.

Is there any other software based photo editing apps I could use?

I'm not sure there are many options, I personally have used both gimp and Photoshop and gimp in very similar

I was going to say GIMP as well is probably your best bet.

Have to agree with above, i also recommend GIMP. Use it myself as well and has many options and is easy to use.

Like the others say I would of said Gimp as well. However, I still think to my opinion, Photoshop is the best to create professional thumbnail.

I use Paint dot net with all the plugins available. Won't change it for other software

Like many stated above, Gimp is a really good option and it's quite a powerful image editing software.

However, if you really like Photoshop and don't mind using a web-based application, the Pixlr Editor is nice and really resembles Photoshop and its interface! It's even capable of opening .PSD files (which is what Photoshop saves to.)

While a web-based application does have its restrictions, it's also nice because it can run on machines that aren't super powerful such as a chromebook.
